- The 21-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 years for the drag race accident.
A Minnesota woman was held responsible for a drag race mishap that killed a couple inside an SUV. The accused was given 15 years in prison for the reckless race that occurred in a 50-mph limit county.
Drag Race Mishap Kills Couple
One of those involved is identified as Camille Dennis-Bond, 21, and her brother Leon Bond, 17, raced in the street with passengers with them, and sped their cars on the eastbound county road at 10:30 am on April 2021, reported Meaww.
One witness saw Leon racing against his sister and slamming into an SUV that turned left from a westbound lane. Dalton Lee and Taylor Nicole Garza died fatally when they were struck by Leon's car. The impact cut the SUV in half, and the couple died on the spot, noted Pierce County Journal.
Aftermath of the Accident
The twin sister of Leon was in the car with him. She got five surgical procedures and spent six weeks in the hospital, cited The StarTribune.
The estimated speed upon impact was 100 mph when the car driven by Leon hit the couple's vehicle. State police said the car hit 114 mph or, if not racing, could be an incident of road rage.
Leon told the police that the siblings had decided to see whoever hit 50 mph first and stop at the stoplight. He miscalculated, thinking it was possible to zip through the intersection but struck the SUV in half instead.
Minnesota Woman Gets 15 Years in Jail
Even if Camille Dennis-Bond was not involved in the collision, she still got caught on two counts of first-degree murder with criminal vehicular homicide. Other charges brought against her are illegal vehicle operation and reckless driving. Instead of the 15 years prescribed, she might only serve nine to ten years with supervised release.
Leon got off easy as he was charged, not as an adult, after pleading guilty to two counts of third-degree murder last January. But the county attorney disagreed with the court in its decision not to prosecute the brother, who was 17 at the time. The county attorney did insist that sentencing must be done as an adult, but a compromise was reached. Leon will stay in juvenile detention until he is 21 years old, but a 25-year sentence waits if he ever commits any probation violations as an adult, as per the court's decision.
Dalton Lee Ford and Tayler Nicole Garza are identified victims of the vehicular accident. It said that Ford and Garza loved each other and shared interests in camping, hiking, car clubs, and traveling.
They loved food and cooked a lot, ate in new restaurants trying new cuisines as part of their preferences, and they both graduated from high school at the same school in 2017.
