Officials report that three children and three staff members were shot and killed at a private school in Nashville, Tennessee.

The incident occurred at Covenant School, a Presbyterian institution that serves roughly 200 children in grades pre-K through 6, according to a Reuters report. As of present writing, it is unclear whether the incident resulted in any further casualties.

According to Vanderbilt University Medical Center spokesman Craig Boerner, the Nashville shooting victims were declared dead upon arrival at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital.

In a statement, the Metro Nashville PD verified the shooter's death and said the school had already been reuniting the pupils with their parents and children at a place safely away from Burton Hills Blvd, where the school is located.

The police department statement reads: "An active shooter event has taken place at Covenant School, Covenant Presbyterian Church, on Burton Hills Dr. The shooter, was engaged by MNPD and is dead. Student reunification with parents is at Woodmont Baptist Church, 2100 Woodmont Blvd."

Nashville police spokesperson Don Aaron said the female shooter "appears to be in her teens" and had two "assault-type rifles" and a pistol, per USA Today. She entered the school through a side door and fired multiple shots on the second floor. It is later revealed that the shooter is a 28-year-old who used to go to the said school she attacked.

Thoughts and Prayers For Nashville School Shooting Victims and Community

This latest Nashville school shooting followed a string of school shootings in the United States, including in Uvalde, Texas where a primary school was attacked last year.

Representative John Ray Clemmons of Tennessee took to social media sympathies for families affected by the Nashville Christian school shooting. "Praying that all the children are safe."

Senator Marsha Blackburn posted on Twitter that she was "heartbroken" to learn of the Nashville elementary school tragedy, noting that her office "has been in touch with federal, state, and local representatives and is prepared to help," according to Fox News.
