Sony PS5 Handheld Gaming Device Likely in the Works: Here’s What to Expect

Get ready to level up your gaming experience with Sony's PS5!

A Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) handheld gaming device is rumored to be under development. It could be the much-awaited successor of the PS Vita, which bid farewell to the market last 2019.

But instead of a second-generation, it looks like Sony has something else in mind this time. The rumored handheld might be heavily based on the PS5 rather than an independent platform. Besides the Vita, PSP fans have long been clamoring for a similar gaming device. After all, Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck are popular these days.

Sony PS5 Handheld Gaming Devices

As per Forbes, Sony is likely working on a new gaming device that could rival the Switch and Steam Deck while succeeding the PS Vita. It reportedly resembles the design of a PS5 controller. Yet, it comes with a massive touchscreen display, allowing games to play their favorite titles on the go.

Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, a well-known leaker confirmed that Sony is developing the highly-anticipated PlayStation handheld. The device is reportedly in the works, carrying the codename Q Lite.

Insider Gaming further disclosed that the handheld gaming device is in the QA phase of its development. Sony plans to introduce it before the rumored PS5 Pro gets the shimmer of the spotlight.

Henderson gave us a glimpse of how the new PlayStation handheld works.

The well-known leaker disclosed that it works as a Remote Play device for the PS5. In other words, it lets users play current gaming titles on the console platform while on the go.

Some of the most sought-after PS5 gamers are "Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales," "Assassin's Creed Valhalla," and "Resident Evil Village." Yet, it remains to be seen if these gaming titles are set to arrive on the rumored handheld.

Meanwhile, CNET notes in its report that this is not the first instance of a rumor hinting at a Sony handheld. Jeff Grubb previously pointed out that the Japanese tech giant is working on the PlayStation cloud gaming device, contrary to claims of Henderson.

As early as now, Insider Gaming gave away the potential specifications of the PlayStation handheld. For its display, it features an 8-inch touchscreen in the middle of the controller-like design, which supports up to 1080p resolution. It might also offer the standard refresh rate of 60 frames per second (fps).

Like a PS5 controller, it is rumored to rock features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for a more immersive gaming experience.

Since it streams games from a PS5 console, it reportedly needs to be connected to the internet. It might feature Wi-Fi connectivity right off the bat.
