The new poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows widespread concern and dread about gun violence exists in the United States, where gun-related tragedies have directly impacted most families.
One in five adults has had a close relative die by gun violence (homicide or suicide), and an equal amount has suffered gun violence in their own lives, according to a recent poll, as reported by CNN.
In addition, around one-sixth of all adults have seen someone injured by a gun.
These results show how pervasive gun violence is, influencing the choices millions of Americans make daily and pushing them to make extra efforts to protect themselves.
Most respondents said they had done something to defend themselves from gun violence, and almost 40% said they had searched out weapons for self-defense or taken courses on gun usage, per NPR.
Three-quarters of gun-owning respondents in the recent national poll of 1,271 individuals said their homes kept at least one firearm that was either unlocked, loaded, or stocked with ammo. These results highlight the need to pay more attention to safe firearms storage.
Staggering Numbers of Gun Violence Victims in The US
The publication of the gun violence study comes with reports of a shooting that left four people dead in Louisville, Kentucky.
There have been 11,523 fatalities in the United States due to gun violence in 2023, with an average of around 115 deaths per day, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive as of April 10th.
Suicide was the leading cause of mortality associated with firearms, accounting for nearly 57% of all deaths, according to ABC News.
This year's gun violence deaths included 398 teenagers and 71 children, highlighting the need for ongoing efforts to combat the widespread problem of gun violence in the United States.
