ChatGPT AI helped a Cardiff University student complete his essay, the undergraduate admits. The results were remarkably in his favor.
The student says that his score for his AI-written essay was the highest he earned. However, this is only one instance in which he has used the chatbot to help him with his coursework and assignments in undergraduate studies. But this time, it got pretty remarkable for him due to the first-grade mark that he received.
Cardiff University reveals that it is now reviewing its existing policies to address the emergence of AI chatbots, including ChatGPT. Soon enough, it plans to release new and updated guidelines.
University Student Uses ChatGPT AI to Write His Essay
As per a report by USA Today, the widespread popularity of ChatGPT has reached students. Some used the AI chatbot to cheat on exams and even help them with their homework. Despite concerns, a recent national survey disclosed that students and their teachers have started adapting to the new AI technology.
But this time, according to BBC, a student at Cardiff University at Whales in the United Kingdom admitted to using the viral AI chatbot. OpenAI's ChatGPT helped him complete his recent essay submission.
He says that he did not ask the OpenAI chatbot to write everything simultaneously. Instead, he used various prompts to help him create a first-grade essay.
The student, who goes by the alias, Tom, to hide his identity, said that it helped him complete his coursework "much quicker." He told the British news outlet that he "[did not] copy everything word for word." Instead, he claims that he "[prompted] it with questions" to help him get the information needed for the essay.
ChatGPT Written Essay Scored Better
He did a personal experiment last January, wherein he presented two essays. One of which was made possible by the AI platform while he wrote the second submission.
Interesting Engineering reports, the university student wanted to find out how a ChatGPT-written essay would compare to the assignments that he made by himself. According to Tom, he averaged roughly 2.1 grades for his previous homework.
On the other hand, the essay wherein the student used ChatGPT ended up getting a first-class grade. The student states that the AI-written coursework gave him his highest mark ever. Meanwhile, the essay he submitted without the help of the chatbot only scored 2.1, consistent with his average mark.
Cardiff University says in its recent statement that it "actively discourages any student from academic misconduct in its many forms." Furthermore, it states that they are taking these cases, primarily plagiarism, "extremely seriously."
