Gateshead Murder Case: Judge Lifts Ban on Naming 15-Year-old Killer To Serve As Warning to Others

The killer stabbed his 14-year-old victim while yelling, "I'm gonna wet you."

A judge has relaxed reporting limitations, allowing the teen convicted of murder in the death of a 14-year-old in a Gateshead park to be identified as Leighton Amies.

Tomasz Oleszak, the victim of his attack, passed away in the early morning of October 4 of last year after being stabbed.

The judge lifted a reporting ban on Amies' name due to his young age, emphasizing the importance of discouraging young people from carrying knives, according to Metro.

Amies stabbed Tomasz deeply in the chest while yelling, "I'm gonna wet you," Newcastle Crown Court had previously been told.

Though he was just 14 then, Amies now claims he is innocent of murder.

As per court testimony, Leighton Amies asserted that he had no knowledge of stabbing the victim and slashing another person's coat and blamed the attack by a group for his actions.

According to testimony given in court, Amies was with his girlfriend in the Springwell neighborhood and was accompanying her home via Whitehills Nature Park when she informed him several youngsters were following them, per the BBC.

Leighton Amies Bragged His Crime

Amies claimed that he took the knife out after being punched, kicked, and wrestled to the ground, but the prosecution said that Amies was lying when he claimed to have been assaulted.

After delivering the deadly blow, the murderer said to the group, "I've wetted your boy," according to testimony given in court.

The prosecution's Mark McKone KC told the jury that Amies wanted them to know he had stabbed one of their numbers and called his action a "boast," Sky News reported.

The defendant's attorney, Peter Makepeace KC, urged the jury to consider themselves in the position of the Amies, claiming that he had not sought out the trouble.

The lawyer argued that Leighton Amies was a 14-year-old who was under attack from a group and had to make difficult decisions on the spot.

The jury convicted Amies of attempting to cause serious bodily harm to the individual whose coat was slashed.
