Florida Governor Ron DeSantis threatens Disney World on Monday. He floats the idea of building a state prison next to the iconic amusement park.
The latest remark of DeSantis against the House of Mouse comes right after the giant American firm publicly opposed his state-sponsored "Don't Say Gay Bill," also known as the Parental Right in Education Act. The Florida Gov. now shared his plan to build a prison near the famous tourist spot in the state.
DeSantis Plans to Build Prison Next to Disney World
As per a report by The Independent, DeSantis' shared with reporters his new plans in retaliation to Disney's opposition to the "Don't Say Gay Bill." This time, he is pushing to construct a prison on the state land next to the popular tourist spot.
The Florida governor told reporters in Lake Buena Vista, the location of the massive theme park of the House of Mouse when he plans to erect a new state prison. He also shared some suggestions on what to do with the state land near Disney World.
The Republican politician says, "People have said maybe create a state park, maybe try to do more amusement parks." He adds that someone reminded him, saying, "You need another state prison." DeSantis told reporters that "Who knows? I just think that the possibilities are endless."
In the same press conference, the governor stated, "We want to make sure that Disney lives under the same laws as everybody else," Fox 35 Colorado reports.
DeSantis vs. Disney
USA Today notes that the ongoing feud between DeSantis and Disney began when the latter made its opposing stand against the "Don't Say Gay Bill" public. The idea to build a prison next to the theme park differs from his first retaliation move. The Republican politician pushed legislation last year to remove the self-governing status of the House of Mouse in Florida.
However, in a surprise turn of events, Disney successfully turned things around, nullifying the state's authority before the new law took effect. DeSantis previously slammed the American conglomerate for what he dubs as being too "woke." His remark came after the giant firm publicly opposed his Parental Rights in Education Act.
Besides the latest threat to build a prison next to Disney World, the governor also raised the idea of increasing the property value tax of the theme park owner.
It is worth noting that the Florida Governor is expected to run for president of the United States (US) in the next few weeks. Thus, DeSantis, who has an ongoing feud against Disney, is currently the presumptive 2024 presidential candidate.
