Authorities said Monday that a woman seeking a friend's house in upstate New York was shot to death after the car she was traveling in went to the wrong location and was met with gunfire in the driveway.
Kaylin Gillis, 20, was driving with three other individuals through the remote hamlet of Hebron on Saturday night when they made a mistake turning into the property.
NY Woman Driven to Wrong Address was Fatally Shot
According to Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy, they attempted to turn the car around when the homeowner, Kevin Monahan, 65, walked out onto his porch and fired two rounds. Gillis was struck by one round. The group traveled to Salem, northeast of Albany, near the Vermont state line, and dialed 911, according to Murphy, who emphasized that the incident occurred in a region with poor mobile phone coverage.
According to Fox News, emergency personnel arrived and attempted CPR on Gillis but could not rescue her. Murphy added that when cops arrived at Monahan's residence to investigate the shooting, he refused to come out.
According to the sheriff, authorities spoke with him for almost an hour through a 911 dispatcher and in person before taking him to jail. Monahan was arrested and put into the Warren County prison on a second-degree murder accusation. It wasn't apparent if he had a counsel who could speak for him.
Murphy stated at a press conference on Monday that Gillis, who lived in Schuylerville, "was an innocent young lady who was out with friends seeking another friend's residence." "There is no cause for Monahan to feel intimidated," he added.
Per CBS News, authorities believe that Monahan is a worker who has resided in Hebron for "quite some time." He has not provided any information to detectives regarding why he allegedly began shooting. Murphy stated, "There was definitely no threat from anyone in the vehicle. Monahan had no reason to feel endangered."
Gillis is a native of Schuylerville, New York. Murphy claimed to come from a decent family. "By all appearances, she was an innocent young girl out with pals," he added.
Incident Comes Following Similar Incident in Missouri
Per ABC News, the killing occurred just days after 16-year-old Ralph Yarl was shot and wounded after traveling to the incorrect residence to pick up his younger brothers in Kansas City, Missouri.
The 85-year-old white man who shot the child twice at his front door was charged with an armed assault on Monday, according to a local prosecutor. Yarl, who was released from the hospital on Sunday and is currently recovering at home, was initially in a critical state.
The shooting comes on the heels of the deadly shooting of a New Mexico homeowner after police arrived at the incorrect location for a domestic violence complaint, as per USA Today. Unidentified Farmington Police officers are shown on body camera footage shooting Robert Dotson, 52 after he opened the door with a pistol. The incident is being investigated, and all three cops have been placed on paid administrative leave.
