Australia won the first Test of the series, which began on Feb. 11, by 281 runs. Mitchell Johnson earned the Man of the Match honors for his performance on the bowling front, which included him taking 12 wickets over two innings.
Much of Australia's win can be credited to their bowlers, who took a total of 19 wickets in the first Test. Shaun Marsh scored 148 runs in the first innings, and Steven Smith added 100 runs. David Warner tallied 115 runs in the second innings while Alex Doolan added 89 runs.
South Africa's batsmen were limited by Australia's bowlers. AB de Villiers, who scored 91 runs in the first innings and 48 in the second, was the main catalyst for his sides underperforming offense.
South Africa's bowlers, led by Dale Steyn's team-high six wickets, took 10 wickets in the first innings but managed to take only four in the second innings.
