- A New Yorker tenant used ChatGPT to deal with an unfair rent hike, forcing the landlord to fix apartment building appliances.
- Svetlana previously filed a complaint and requested to decrease rent over broken appliances unusable for two years.
- Svetlana used the artificial intelligence chatbot to draft a letter to lower her rent and send it to her landlord.
A New York woman used ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot, to scare her landlord into fixing her apartment building after he tried to increase her rent despite broken appliances.
Svetlana, the tenant who used ChatGPT to write a letter, questioned the landlord's audacity in increasing her rent despite the issues that she had been experiencing. She noted that this was a response to her complaint and request for a rent decrease due to decreased building-wide services.
ChatGPT Gets Landlord To Fix Apartment Building
Svetlana revealed that washers and dryers in the apartment building were not been working for more than two years. However, she suddenly received a message last February notifying her that her rent would rise by 0.4%, bringing it up from $1,389 to $1,395, as per Fox News.
The chatbot can simulate human-like conversations using only a user's prompts. It was also found to have the fastest-growing user base, with data showing 100 million active monthly users in January.
In an interview, Svetlana said that it took a few attempts for ChatGPT to get the perfect responses that had more "legalese." The chatbot generated a letter that cited the New York rent stabilization code and argued against the landlord that increasing the rent would be considered retaliatory following her request for a decrease in monthly rent.
The 28-year-old New York resident said that the exchange showed the beauty of ChatGPT, highlighting its ability to collaborate, bounce ideas, and put thoughts into a cohesive piece of writing. She compared the artificial intelligence chatbot to a super-smart, objective, real-time sounding board.
Rising Popularity of Artificial Intelligence
Svetlana said that she never received an official response from her landlord following the conversation with ChatGPT. However, in the same month of the interaction, both the washer and dryer of the apartment building were fixed, according to the New York Post.
The New Yorker used a prompt that asked ChatGPT to pose as a housing lawyer who was "well-versed in New York City law." She asked the chatbot to write a letter to the Division of Housing and Community Renewal that opposed her landlord's attempt to increase her rent over the various complaints that she had previously filed.
The artificial intelligence chatbot even added a line that cited a specific New York rent stabilization code section. The New York executive assistant resident had prior experience using ChatGPT due to the nature of her job.
The situation underscores the recent rise in popularity of ChatGPT, including a man from Hong Kong who asked the bot to come up with an idea for names for his new child, said Inquirer.
