Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards faces an assault citation after allegedly hitting two female employees with a chair amid their Game 5 loss at the Ball Arena, according to police.
The incident occurred on the night that the Wolves succumbed to its series-ending Game 5 loss against the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday, the police say.
Wolves' Anthony Edwards Cited for Assault
According to ABC News, the Denver Police Department cited the Wolves guard for third-degree assaults after allegedly hitting two female security guards with a chair at the Ball Arena.
The spokesman of the Denver Police Department, Jay Casillas, explained what happened during that night in an interview with ESPN.
The spokesperson disclosed that the Wolves guard allegedly threw a chair, hitting two employees, causing them injuries. However, Casillas ensures that the injuries of the security guards were not at all "serious."
The Wolves have already responded to the assault citation in a recent statement to the press, saying that they are "aware of the alleged incident," which includes one of their players, Edwards. In the meantime, the NBA basketball team notes that they are still "in the process of gathering more information." And as such, the Minnesota team declined to give any additional comment as of writing.
Meanwhile, Edwards has yet to personally address the incident following his assault citation.
Bleacher Reports highlights that the three-degree assault citation may put the Wolves guard in jail for up to 18 months, according to the state law of Colorado. He could also be asked to pay a fine of $1,000. It is worth noting that he would only potentially face these punishments once the court convicts him.
The citation requires the 21-year-old NBA player to face the court on June 9.
Anthony Edwards Allegedly Threw a Chair, Hitting 2 Employees
The incident reportedly happened after Edwards missed a crucial three, which could have potentially tied the game, according to NBC Sports. As the Wolves guard was on his way off the court, he took a folding chair and threw it aimlessly, which allegedly hit two employees at the arena.
Dane Moore, who primarily covers the Minnesota NBA team, shares that he saw the incident transpire. In his recent tweet, he believes it was an "honest mistake." But despite that, he says that the Wolves guard should not have thrown the folding chair in the first place.
Edwards just ended his third NBA season with an impressive average of 24.66 points per game. Above and beyond that, the Wolves guard scored a team record-breaking 29 points as they lost to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the NBA playoff series.
