"Dodgeball 2" is now officially in the works with Vince Vaughn making his comeback to the much-awaited sequel.
The "Dodgeball" follow-up development comes nearly two decades after the original film hit the big screen.
'Dodgeball' 2: Vince Vaughn is Returning for its Sequel
Get ready to dodge, dip, dive, and dodge once again as the long-awaited sequel of the cult classic comedy movie is now in the works. After two decades or roughly 20 years, since the first film debuted, part two is now under development. Deadline broke the news.
The upcoming sequel is still in its early stages of development. But despite that, few details about "Dodgeball 2" are now out. First off, the sources of Deadline say that no less than Vaughn himself is part of the new movie.
Variety notes that Vaughn played the lead role in the original film, "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," which hit the big screen in 2004. And now, the 53-year-old actor will return to reprise his role as Peter LaFleur, the owner of the Average Joe's gym.
The original film includes other cast members, such as Chris William, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Christine Taylor, Gary Cole, William Shatner, Jason Bateman, and Hank Azaria. Rip Torn, who already passed away, is part of the film as well. However, it remains to be seen if the original cast will join Vaughn in the sequel.
Dodgeball Sequel in the Works
It is worth noting that Stiller is one of the producers of the original "Dodgeball" film. But it is still unclear if he will be part of the sequel.
Justin Long previously disclosed that Vaughn is also gearing up to set up a sequel of the movie. However, he told ComicBook.com that Stiller was still "a little trepidatious" about pursuing the highly-anticipated part two since the first one was "so beloved, something that people enjoy so much."
Nevertheless, Variety reports that the sequel is now officially in the works with Jordan Vandina as the scriptwriter of the upcoming movie.
Deadline notes that the original film made millions of dollars roughly two decades ago with a blockbuster gross to the tune of more than $168 million. To put it in perspective, the budget for the cult classic is only around $20 million. So it sure made a lot of money.
The movie follows the story of the Average Joe's gym owner as he tries to avoid a looming takeover of giant fitness firm Globo Gym, which White Goodman, played by Ben Stiller, runs. And to do so, LaFleur (Vaughn) dips his toes in a dodgeball tournament with all eyes on the staggering $50,000 prize, which should be enough to save his gym.
On the other hand, the plot of the sequel has yet to be revealed.
