Johnny Depp received an overwhelming seven-minute standing ovation at the premiere of his new film, "Jeanne Du Barry," as he graced his Cannes Film Festival comeback.
The embattled actor has been elusive from the public eye since he faced the highly-publicized legal battle between the actor and his ex-girlfriend Amber Heard.
Johnny Depp Cannes Film Festival Comeback
The Hollywood icon Depp captivated the audience at the renowned Cannes Film Festival with his performance at the opening film at the star-studded annual event.
As per Lad Bible, the actor held his tears after the crowd at the French film fest stood up in applause to the 'Jeanne du Barry' star. When the actor entered the premiere of the Cannes opening film, the crowd was ecstatic with his much-awaited comeback to the big screen.
On top of that, the crowd erupted into thunderous applause, initiating a standing ovation that seemed to last for an eternity. Depp, seemingly shocked by the overwhelming response from the audience, waved on the balcony as he got a bit emotional, according to Variety.
But apart from the positive response, Depp's comeback also faced backlash. The Independent UK reports that critics slammed the Cannes director Thierry Fremaux for opening the doors of the renowned festival to the 59-year-old actor.
However, he still stood by and welcomed Depp back. The backlash comes from the allegations that his ex-wife Heard hurled against him during the defamation trial, which concluded in 2022.
Lad Bible notes that the trial affected the career of Depp, kicking him out from massive franchises, such as the 'Fantastic Beast' and the 'Pirates of the Caribbean.' Some were skeptical about his comeback to the big screen due to the high-publicized lawsuit.
But despite that, the star-studded crowd's positive response in France shows that the embattled actor is still beloved.
Depp's New Film 'Jeanne du Barry'
Depp stars King Louis XV, the lover of Jeanne Vaubernier, which the film's director Maiwenn played. The latter had a humble beginning as a working class in France. But she did not settle at that as she eventually rose to social ranks and married the 18th-century king.
The movie, which marks Depp's comeback to the big screen, also features Pascal Greggory, Melvil Poupaud, Benjamin Lavernhe, and Pierre Richard.
The opening film at Cannes marks the monumental comeback of Depp, giving him a high-profile role in a movie after his legal battle with his ex-wife.
The Cannes director, Fremaux, addressed the appearance of Depp at the French festival, saying, "I [do not] know about the image of Johnny Depp in the US." He shared his one rule in life: "the freedom of thinking, and the freedom of speech and acting within a legal framework.
