Ukraine President Zelensky To Join G7 Japan Summit in Person
According to Bloomberg, officials in Japan previously announced that the Ukrainian president is joining the G7 leaders virtually on Sunday. His virtual attendance seeks to grace the additional summit session on Ukraine.
However, the sources of Bloomberg, who are familiar with the matter, say that President Zelenskiy is joining the Japan summit in person rather than virtually. The sources were unnamed since the attendance of the Ukraine leader is confidential.
The G7 Japan Summit holds immense importance for global affairs. Leaders from the world's most influential democracies discuss crucial issues shaping our collective future. The summit covers pressing topics, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine. With Zelensky's arrival, the stakes have been raised even higher.
Notably, President Zelensky has an array of critical topics to address during the G7 Summit centering on the escalating tensions with Russia. The upcoming visit of Zelenskiy to Hiroshima is quite significant due to its utter symbolism since it was the ground zero for the first-ever nuclear attack in 1945. In the present day, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been spewing various threats of possibly using atomic weapons against Ukraine.
Ukraine President's Visits After Russian Invasion
The Ukraine President had his first-ever trip since Russia's invasion late last year. According to The Washington Post, Zelensky visited Washington in the United States to meet President Biden at the White House last December 2022. The Ukraine leader also addressed the US Congress during his visit last year.
Since then, Zelensky has visited various European countries to seek heightened Western support amid the Russian invasion. His recent trips include G-7 member countries, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Italy.
The Catholic News Agency reports that the Ukraine president and Pope Francis met last May 13, marking the first encounter between the two since the Russian invasion. Their meeting lasted for roughly 40 minutes, as Zelenskiy discussed the situation in Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict with the Catholic leader.
After Zelensky's stop in Saudi Arabia to join the Arab League summit, the Ukraine leader reportedly continues with his international diplomatic discussions. He will fly via a US military plane to Hiroshima, Japan, to attend the G7 Summit. It marks his first-ever visit to Asia since the Russian invasion.
