A man named Jozef B was killed on May 16 after attempting to feed his pet lions at a small zoo he owned in the Slovakian town of Oskerda.
Police responding at the scene have only managed to retrieve parts of his body. They were also forced to kill two of the lions.
Animal maltreatment
According to The Sun, Jozef had a permit to breed the wild animals only until 2019. He has since kept the beasts without renewing the permit.
Moreover, locals complained about Jozef being "very arrogant" when he was called out for allegedly abusing the animals and leaving them in "very bad conditions." He also had run-ins with law enforcers and animal rights groups since 2017.
Expired permit
In 2019, a 29-year-old woman was injured after petting a tiger at Jozef's zoo. Jozef denied there were bad practices within the zoo, saying that no one was at risk.
Slovak authorities said they had last inspected the zoo in 2021, and the owner was fined €2,000 ($2,161.18) for unclear reasons.
They are now considering whether to put down all of the wild animals at the zoo due to its "unsuitable environment."
