Florida governor Ron DeSantis plans to announce his 2024 White House bid in a conversation with Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
The two will host an event on Twitter Spaces at 18:00 ET (22:00 UTC) and will be moderated by tech entrepreneur and DeSantis supporter David Sacks.
Musk previously stated he would support DeSantis should he run for president.
Alongside the chat, the campaign will release a launch video.
It was also revealed the Republican aspirant would begin visiting several states after Memorial Day.
The announcement will be made alongside a retreat at the Four Seasons hotel in Miami for high-end fundraisers of DeSantis's campaign.
Elon Musk's role
According to sources familiar with the campaign, the governor has been talking with Musk about the launch for at least a few weeks prior. Musk, inside sources said, believes former US president Donald Trump could not be able to win the 2024 election.
Additionally, Musk, who will relinquish his CEO post on Twitter to Linda Yaccarino in the next few weeks, divulged his participation in the DeSantis campaign launch at the 2023 Wall Street Journal CEO Summit Council but indicated he would not formally support the candidate at that time.
Musk said such a major political announcement on social media was "quite groundbreaking".
While he categorically distanced himself from campaigning for DeSantis, sources said Musk's participation was viewed as a clear sign of support.
Who is Ron DeSantis?
Ron DeSantis began his career as a Little League baseball player. He was part of the Dunedin team at the 1991 World Series before becoming team captain of the Yale University team.
He went to Harvard Law School and became a US Navy Judge Advocate General officer, serving in both Iraq and Guantanamo Bay.
DeSantis ran for Congress in 2012 and became a founding member of the far-right Freedom Caucus and pushed for changes to Medicare and Social Security. He served in Congress for three terms before running for the governorship of Florida in 2018.
As governor, DeSantis used his time in office to declare a war on "wokeism". One of the highlights of his time in office was the passing and expansion of the Parental Rights in Education bill, more known by his critics as the "Don't Say Gay" law, banning the teaching of LGBT+ issues in the state's public schools.
DeSantis also signed a law banning abortions at six weeks into pregnancy and enacted a law permitting Floridians to carry a concealed firearm without a permit.
DeSantis vs. Disney
One of De Santis's harshest critics over the "Don't Say Gay" law was Florida-based entertainment giant Disney, who filed a lawsuit against the governor for intervening with its internal affairs, as well as with the operations of Disney World.
Disney has also announced that it was scrapping its plan to build a new site in central Florida which would have employed around 2,000 people.
