A student fatally shot another student outside a school in Pittsburgh at 07:30 early Wednesday morning (11:30 UTC). The victim was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Gunfire erupted on the steps outside Oliver Citywide Academy, a full-time special education center serving students from grades 3 to 12.
Police said the shooter, whose motive remains unknown, attempted to flee the scene but was immediately captured. They also stated both students involved were under the age of 18.
"We believe, based on the information that we have and the video we've been able to see, that we have the actor in custody, and there's no potential threat to the other schools," Pittsburgh Police Major Crimes Officer Richard Ford said.
Local authorities said most students were still on their way to school when the shooting occurred, while those who had already arrived were locked down inside the building as a safety precaution.
The school's classes were suspended for the day following the shooting.
The shooting came over a year after a similar incident in January 2022 that caused the death of 15-year-old Marquis Campbell while sitting in his school van after class hours. The alleged shooters were charged earlier this year for Campbell's murder.
