A man was arrested after his car crashed into the gates outside Downing Street at around 16:30 London time.
According to the BBC, the Metropolitan Police quickly arrested the driver of a white car on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving.
No other injuries were reported.
Police have also set up a cordon along Whitehall, the main road running past Downing Street, which has been closed off to the public as officers investigate the incident.
British prime minister Rishi Sunak was in Downing Street by the time of the crash but has since left for a scheduled visit. As Downing Street serves as the official residence of the British prime minister, the place is always guarded by armed and unarmed police.
The incident happened as many civil servants in London were leaving or preparing to leave their offices for the day.
