Those who have said Ryan Gosling is too old to portray Ken in the Barbie movie have been given a rebuttal from Gosling himself.
The casting of 42-year-old Gosling as Ken has been widely criticized, especially by younger Barbie fans, who had taken to social media in droves when each new picture and video for the film was released, as reported by Variety.
Earlier this year, The New York Post summed up the social media argument about Gosling's age among various generations of Barbie fans.
Gosling Slamming 'Barbie' Critics
Asking how Gosling feels about the comments made about his seeming advanced age, he recently told GQ magazine: "If people don't want to play with my Ken, there are many other Kens to play with."
He thinks the issue was hilarious, adding, "This kind of clutching-your-pearls idea of, like, #notmyken. Like you ever thought about Ken before this?"
Gosling pointed out that Ken has spent his whole life doing nothing except relaxing on the beach and being Barbie's boyfriend.
"And everyone was fine with that, for him to have a job that is nothing. But suddenly, it's like, 'No, we've cared about Ken this whole time.' No, you didn't. You never did. You never cared," Gosling stated.
"If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. So your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his story must be told."
Gosling was so amused by his own criticism of his Ken portrayal that he had to stop talking, according to GQ. The actor continued, "I care about this dude now. I'm like his representative. 'Ken couldn't show up to receive this award, so I'm here to accept it for him.'"
'Barbie' Premieres on July 21
Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, brings both Ken and Barbie dolls to the real world for reasons neither Warner Bros. nor the actors have yet revealed, Variety reported.
Not only does Gosling play Ken, but so do Simu Liu, Scott Evans, John Cena, Ncuti Gatwa, and Kingsley Ben-Adir, to name a few. The film also stars Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, pop star Dua Lipa, Will Ferrell, and Barbie herself, Margot Robbie.
The film Barbie is set to debut in cinemas on July 21.
Gosling Wanting Kids With Eva Mendes
The Oscar nominee also addressed his time away from Hollywood following the birth of his second kid with companion Eva Mendes. he said he wanted to spend as much time as possible with them.
The pair, who have children named Esmeralda and Amada, met on the set of 2011's A Place Beyond the Pines and have been together ever since, according to Evening Standard.
"I wasn't thinking about kids before I met her, but after I met Eva, I [realized] that I just didn't want to have kids without her," Gosling stated.
