According to a report by National Today, besides the popular Mother's and Father's Day, the global celebration also honors both of them, aptly called the Global Day of Parents.

The special day all began way back in 1983 when the United Nations Economic and Social Council recommended the idea. And from there, the Commission for Social Development requested the Secretary-General to raise awareness of the problems and needs of families to another level. It enabled decision-makers and the rest of the world to find ways to address the existing issues.

And with that, The General Assembly proclaimed in 1993 the annual celebration of the International Day of Families every May 15. It goes to show that as early as the 80s, the significant roles of families in society have been taking the spotlight in the international scene.

In 2012, The General Assembly established the Global Day of Parents, which honors their unwavering sacrifices every June 1st of the year.

Apart from commemorating families as a whole, the annual celebration seeks to focus on the role of parents in nurturing the younger generation. The special day also recognizes the importance of promoting the well-being of families and the significant contribution parents make to society, according to Hindustan Times.

Global Day of Parents This June 2023: How to Celebrate

In many countries, the Global Day of Parents is an occasion for families to come together and spend quality time with their parents.

It is an opportunity to express gratitude, love, and appreciation for the unconditional support and guidance parents provide throughout their lives. Children often take this day as an opportunity to pamper their parents, organize surprise celebrations, or present them with heartfelt gifts. It does not have to be grand or ultra-fancy, it is the simple gesture that counts.

National Today suggests exchanging stories and thoughts with your parents could be a fun way to celebrate the special day. Or better yet, to break the ice, spend some time watching a movie with your family, which should ignite conversations afterward.

The UN formally celebrates this year's Global Day of Parents with the theme: "The power of parenting: raising happy, healthy, and hopeful children."

It points out the integral role of parenthood in the development and well-being of young minds. It not only provides them with the love, care, and protection they need, but it also shapes their identity.
