Joshua J. Murphy Named Special Agent in Charge of the Mission Services Division at the Los Angeles Field Office

Director Christopher Wray has named Joshua J. Murphy as the special agent in charge of the Mission Services Division at the Los Angeles Field Office. Mr. Murphy most recently served as an inspector with the Inspection Division at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Murphy joined the FBI as a special agent in 2006. He first worked in the New York Field Office, where he investigated counterintelligence matters involving the People's Republic of China. In 2012, he was promoted to supervisory special agent in the Iran/Iraq Counterintelligence Unit of the Counterintelligence Division at FBI Headquarters, where he served as program manager over multiple field offices as they worked matters related to Iranian and Iraqi counterintelligence threats.

In 2014, Mr. Murphy was promoted to serve as the detailee to the Central Intelligence Agency's Iran Operations Division, acting as the FBI's operational liaison and ensuring the two agencies coordinated with each other. He was promoted in 2015 to unit chief for the Middle East and Africa Counterintelligence Unit in the Counterintelligence Division at FBI Headquarters. He served as the national program manager for field offices working counterintelligence threats originating in the Middle East and Africa.

In 2016, Mr. Murphy was promoted to supervisory special agent and reported to the Cincinnati Field Office, where he was responsible for counterintelligence matters and served as the Counterintelligence Program Coordinator. In 2018, he led the first overseas arrest and extradition of a senior Chinese intelligence officer, and in 2019 led the overseas arrest of a senior Russian intelligence officer.

Mr. Murphy was promoted in 2019 to assistant special agent in charge for the Seattle Field Office's Counterterrorism Branch. He switched to assistant special agent in charge of Seattle's National Security Branch in 2020. In 2021, Mr. Murphy was promoted to inspector in the Inspection Division, where he led field office inspections and conducted internal reviews.

Prior to joining the FBI, Mr. Murphy served on active and reserve duty as a non-commissioned officer and commissioned officer in the U.S. Army and in the New York Army National Guard. He is graduate of the University at Albany in New York.
