A Miami expressway was put to a halt after a woman screams her baby boy stopped breathing.
According to the Miami Herald, traffic going westbound on the Dolphin Expressway came to a standstill early afternoon on Feb. 20. Pamela Rauseo, 37, went out of her car holding her 5-month-old nephew, Sebastian de la Cruz, who was quickly turning blue.
"My sister had trusted me with him," she told reporters.
Rauseo's cries were heard and motorists rushed to help the panicking aunt, including a Miami Herald photographer, who was able to both flag down help for Sebastian and capture the frightening incident on camera. (Click here to view photos).
"As a photojournalist you want to capture these images, but as a human being you want to get help," Diaz told the New York Daily News on Thursday.
Another good Samaritan, Lucila Godoy, 34, hopped out of her car to help Rauseo resuscitate the unconscious baby. Rauseo explained her nephew was born prematurely and had respiratory issues since birth, the Herald reports.
While Godoy help Rauseo, Diaz was able to find police officer Amauris Bastidas, who took over CPR and was able to revive the baby.
"I lifted him up in the air and moved him up and down," Bastidas said. "He started breathing and crying."
However, the baby stopped breathing shortly after, but by that time Capt. Anthony Trim and Lt. Alvaro Tonanez with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's hazardous materials unit had arrived to help.
"Miami Fire Rescue arrived moments later and rushed Sebastian to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Pediatrics unit," the Herald reports.
Diaz told the Daily News authorities and additional help made it to the scene within minutes of Rauseo's cries for help.
"Everybody got there in seconds, it seemed," Diaz said.
According to the Miami Herald, little Sebastian was listed in stable condition Thursday evening.
