- Former United States President Donald Trump to host his first fundraiser for his 2024 presidential campaign on the day of his arraignment
- The Republican businessman scheduled his event only a few hours after he was expected to appear at a Miami courtroom
- Trump's first fundraiser is expected to raise roughly $2 million from donors and bundlers
Former United States President Donald Trump is set to host the first fundraiser of his 2024 presidential campaign on the day of his arraignment in the classified documents case.
The Republican businessman plans to host his 2024 campaign's first fundraiser on Tuesday evening, only a few hours after he is expected to be arraigned in a Miami courtroom. The event is scheduled to be held at Trump's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
Trump To Host Fundraiser on Day of Arraignment
Advisers have said that it would be the first in a series of gatherings that seeks to get support from donors and bundlers that the former president will host across the country. As per Politico, the first fundraiser campaign is expected to raise roughly $2 million, which would help Trump have additional funds weeks before the end of the second-quarter deadline.
Trump's arraignment earlier that day will be in response to his being summoned over charges that stemmed from his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House. The former president was found to have taken sensitive materials into his Florida Mar-a-Lago estate and is claimed to have refused federal officials' requests to return them.
Since his indictment last week, the former president has been defiant in the case, saying he would continue his 2024 campaign even if convicted of criminal charges. Trump himself is expected to join the fundraiser after addressing the indictment, said a person familiar with the matter.
The situation comes as the Republican businessman started preparations for the fundraiser long before the court appearance was made public. In recent polls, Trump is shown to have large leads over his GOP primary rivals.
Former President's Indictment
Trump's first fundraiser also challenges Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose first 24 hours of the campaign raised just over $8 million. According to CNBC, the former president's campaign did not answer questions regarding who is bundling for its latest run for the top position in the United States.
The event comes as many of the Republican businessman's former big-money donors, such as Blackstone CEO Steve Schwarzman, have begun to distance themselves from Trump. This was due to the former president's involvement in the Capitol Hill riot, where hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the building on Jan. 6, 2021.
Trump announced his indictment on his Truth Social platform, expressing his surprise and claiming his innocence. He added that it was the only evidence that the US is already in "serious and rapid Decline."
Furthermore, the former president accused President Joe Biden and his administration of being "corrupt." Newsweek said the fundraising email from the Trump campaign was released only an hour after officials announced the former president's indictment.
