Ukraine claimed victory against Russian troops in its eighth village during the two-week counteroffensive, a community on a highly defended sector of the front line close to the shortest approach to the Azov Sea coast.

On Sunday, June 18, a Russian-installed official claimed that Ukraine had retaken the village of Piatykhatky in southern Zaporizhzhia. Then, on Monday morning, June 19, he said Ukraine had attacked again after Moscow had forced them out.

Retaking Ukrainian Villages

Hanna Maliar, deputy defense minister of Ukraine, pointed out that in two weeks, Ukrainian soldiers captured 113 square kilometers (44 square miles) of terrain and retook Piatykhatky.

According to Reuters, reports of Ukrainian success in capturing the settlements are encouraging. Still, they also show how difficult it will be to breach the defenses Moscow has spent months fortifying.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, praising the armed forces actions, pledged to keep working with Western allies to provide more weapons and ammunition to the Ukrainian military expeditiously.

"Our troops are advancing, position by position, step by step, we are moving forward. The main thing is the speed of supply," he stated Sunday night.

Kyiv's counteroffensive has been centered on the eastern Donetsk region. The Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday that its troops had repelled a Ukrainian effort to seize the settlement of Novodonetske there.

A seized French tank was seen in a video that was leaked. There was no additional word from Kyiv, so there was no confirmation of the most recent reports from the front lines.

The Long-Awaited Counteroffensive

Ukraine has admitted to strikes along numerous sections of the 1,000-kilometer front line as part of its long-awaited counteroffensive. Russia now occupies 18% of Ukraine.

However, for concerns of security, Kyiv has imposed a blackout on information about ongoing and upcoming conflicts. The majority of the counteroffensive, according to analysts, has not even started yet.

The recent battle seems to have cost both sides heavily. However, each nation claims to have lost fewer men than their opponent.

Thousands of civilians have been murdered, and whole cities have been devastated. Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes due to the fighting, contributing to a rise in worldwide inflation and altered international security.

Ukraine and its Western allies believe Russia's claim that it invaded Ukraine to "denazify" is only a pretext for taking over more territory.

On Monday, Swedish lawmakers declared that Russia is now considered a long-term danger to European and global security. Sweden requested to join NATO last year in the wake of the invasion.

Moscow Redeployment

It has been reported by officials from two NATO members that Moscow is redeploying some of its troops to forecast where Ukraine would strike.

Russia, according to British and Estonian intelligence officers via Reuters, had started shifting some of its soldiers east along the front line from regions south of the Dnipro River that were flooded when the massive Kakhovka dam was destroyed on June 6.
