Mexican authorities destroyed 14 homemade armored tanks allegedly built by narco criminal gangs in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas.
The Attorney General's Office of Mexico announced the destruction of the improvised armored tanks, aptly dubbed "monstrous," which means "monsters" in English.
Mexico Destroys 14 Homemade Armored Tanks
Mexico has dealt a powerful blow to the ambitions of narco criminal gangs by confiscating and obliterating 14 ingenious homemade armored tanks, carefully crafted to evade the clutches of law enforcement.
As per a report by Vice, Mexican armed forces seized the "monstrous" tanks during their recent series of operations at the northeastern border state of Tamaulipas.
The Mexican authorities shattered the dreams of criminals who sought to rule the streets with their impromptu war machines. The improvised tanks are typically made from heavy-duty vehicles fitted with armor plating and mounted with machine guns or other weapons. Criminal groups allegedly use these vehicles to attack rival gangs, the military, or the police.
The local criminal gangs allegedly designed these armored vehicles to be sturdy and rugged enough to withstand bullets and other explosives. It encapsulates the determination of these groups to rule in their areas.
Vice notes that several criminal groups consider Tamaulipas their home, such as the Gulf Cartel warring factions. The Zetas and Northeastern Cartels are also based in the region, Sinaloa, and the Jalisco New Generation Cartels. However, it is unclear if the seized tanks belonged to these groups.
The Mexican government recently flexed its muscle and wrecked these crude but functional machinery. The Attorney General's Office confirmed in a press release that the armed forces destroyed 14 armored vehicles known as monstrous.
The destruction of the 14 monstrous leaves a significant blow to the criminal groups operating in Tamaulipas. On top of that, it also shows that the Mexican government is taking a more aggressive stance against organized crime.
Mexico's Attorney General Office, which goes by FGR Mexico on Twitter, shared photos and videos of the armored vehicles in a recent tweet.
Homemade Narco Tanks in Mexico
Besides the recent destruction of improvised armored tanks, Mexico authorities seized other similarly crude vehicles last April and February. Specifically, the Mexican government also destroyed nine armored tanks allegedly built by narco criminal gangs in Tamaulipas last April.
And as early as February, the local authorities also got their hands on roughly 11 improvised tanks, which they destroyed later. In June, the authorities continued cracking down on these armored vehicles by destroying 14 more homemade tanks allegedly built by narco gangs in Tamaulipas, Mexico.
