The Los Angeles Clippers and Brooklyn Nets are reportedly the frontrunners to sign center Glen Davis, who agreed to a buyout on Thursday with the Orlando Magic. The Charlotte Bobcats are also reportedly discussing a buyout with guard Ben Gordon.
Yahoo Sports first reported the agreement between the Magic and Davis to buy out the remainder of his contract. Orlando had tried to find a suitor for Davis, who makes $6.4 million this season and $6.6 million next season, before the NBA trade deadline on Thursday but was unable to find a partner.
Davis will become a free agent on Monday if he clears waivers. Assuming he does go unclaimed, he could reunite with his former coach, Doc Rivers, in Los Angeles.
"Magic buyout of Glen Davis officially done as of 15 minutes ago, sources say," ESPN's Ramona Shelburne tweeted on Friday. "Clippers among teams interested."
Adrian Wojnarowski also reported the Clippers' interest in acquiring Davis.
"Clippers remain a strong frontrunner to sign Glen Davis once he clears waivers," Wojnarowski tweeted on Friday.
The Clippers' biggest competition for the veteran big man, if he clears waivers, appears to be Brooklyn.
"Brooklyn is pursuing Davis hard too, sources tell Yahoo Sports," Wojnarowski tweeted on Friday. "Kevin Garnett is working to help recruit his ex-Celtics teammate."
Orlando wasn't the only team unable to find a trade on Thursday. Charlotte couldn't move Gordon and is now reportedly negotiating terms with him to buy out his contract.
"Charlotte is engaged in contract buyout discussions with Ben Gordon, league sources tell Yahoo Sports," Wojnarowski tweeted on Friday.
Gordon, in the final year of his contract, is set to make $13.2 million this season.
Davis is averaging 12.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game this season; Gordon is averaging just 5.3 points per game.
