The United Kingdom recorded its joint hottest day so far this year.
But despite that, thunderstorms and heavy rains are set to pour around northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
UK Records Hottest Day of the Year
According to the BBC, the UK sizzled on Sunday, June 26, as temperatures soared to 32.2C (89.8F), the joint hottest day of the year. Notably, the hottest temperature recorded was in Coningsby in Lincolnshire. It is worth mentioning that the hottest recorded temperature last year, on July 19, 2022, climbed to a staggering 40.3C.
As The Independent reports, many people are enjoying the hot weather. Beaches and parks are filled with people. Thousands of folks took the chance to sit back and relax at the beaches amid the weekend heat. However, The Met Office, alongside the UK Health Security Agency or UKHSA, issued a yellow weather warning for the heat across the country for the entire weekend.
The Met Office is urging people to take precautions against the heat.
Met Office meteorologist Amy Bokota advised people to drink water to stay hydrated and wear sun protection since the UV levels are strikingly high. On top of that, she also says, "Make sure you are not putting any disposable barbecues on any grassland area."
After recording the hottest joint temperature for the year, the weather in the UK is cooling down by next week. According to The Guardian, folks in the southeast are most likely to breathe fresher air in the coming week.
To be more precise, London's temperature is encountering "quite a significant drop," Bokota says. The temperature in the largest city of the UK should not exceed 24C on Monday.
Beyond that, the Met Office meteorologist notes that it is "likely to feel a lot more comfortable than it has done for the last couple of weeks."
Thunderstorms in the North
Amid the scorching weather across the country, thunderstorms and heavy rains are right around the corner.
The Met Office also issued yellow thunderstorm warnings in various locations, such as northeast England and Eastern Scotland, between 1 pm and 9 pm on Sunday, June 25. Another warning encompasses Northern Ireland from 2 pm to 7 pm on Sunday.
The national weather service of the UK stresses that the hottest day of the year could "turn into a thundery Sunday for some." Some people are already reporting heavy downpours and hail as the scorching heat brings thunderstorms to some parts of the country.
