Hunter Biden, the son of United States President Joe Biden, struck a deal with federal prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to tax evasion and illegally purchasing a gun.
The US attorney for Delaware, David Weiss, announced the plea deal of the president's son on Tuesday, June 20.
Hunter Biden's Plea Deal
According to The Washington Post, Biden is facing two charges. One is his failure to pay his taxes, whereas the other centers on his lie about his gun purchase. Biden will plead guilty to failing to pay his taxes in two instances, specifically in 2017 and 2018. He failed to pay his taxes worth a whopping $100,000 after earning roughly $1.5 million each year.
WaPo reports that Biden grappled with financial problems after struggling with his loans. Despite that, the president's son still paid the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) after reportedly taking a loan from one of his rich buddies.
On top of that, the 53-year-old Biden will also admit to unlawfully purchasing a gun, according to Weiss. As per a report by Vox, the president's son admitted that he lied about his gun purchase.
In 2018, he claimed in a federal form for purchasing a gun that he was not a drug user then. However, he previously admitted that he was a drug user when he purchased the weapon that year. After his claim, Biden successfully purchased a gun, denying that he was "an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance."
Yet, the president's son narrated in his book that he had a cocaine addiction during the said period. He recalls that he smoked the illegal substance so damn frequently or roughly "every 15 minutes."
Although Biden admits to unlawfully getting his hands on a gun, he is not pleading guilty to the gun charges. And as such, Washington Post reports that the prosecutors are no longer prosecuting him under some conditions for them to ditch the charges. It is under the diversion program, which typically occurs in cases wherein the offenders with drug use problems have no signs of being violent.
How Did These Charges Start?
These charges against Hunter Biden came about after years of investigating his work that dives into foreign interests for the past years.
The investigation by the Department of Justice, which Weiss led, formally began in 2018, when Donald Trump was still the President of the United States. Initially, investigators looked at Biden's work, involving tycoons from China and Ukraine.
But later, the investigation shifted its focus to other issues they discovered. They are now looking into Biden's failure to pay his income tax for two years and his unlawful gun purchase.
