Online Attacks Against Titanic Sub Victims Show Our Culture’s Lack of Empathy, Says Psychologist

A cultural specialist and psychologist is worried about a decline in empathy among Americans and believes that the harsh remarks made online about the victims of the submersible that imploded while traveling to see the Titanic wreckage.

Its CEO stated in a video interview last year that the Titan submersible OceanGate, which has been charging tourists approximately $250,000 each to ride in, is driven by a cheap video game controller. Located 1,600 feet from the Titanic wreckage, the Titan of the OceanGate imploded, killing its five passengers.

Rude Remarks on Social Media

Online remarks that were hostile and ridiculing arose as the search was going on. Some people said, "Eat the rich," as reported by Fox News.

According to clinical psychologist Michelle Solomon, there is a lack of empathy in our culture now. As big tech companies made these social media platforms for fast scrolling, people now care more about time online but now how they spend it. She also noted that it had become a problem because the younger generations are the ones that will be carrying it to society. Solomon also noted that it's "scary" and "problematic."

She also noted that fast-scrolling on social media made people disconnect from their feelings, specifically from the part of themselves that feels empathy for another person. Solomon said, "If you're scrolling fast enough and you're not disconnecting from what actually happened, you would find something funny, and then you'd scroll onto the next thing [without processing it]."

Why People Found the Titan Story Captivating

Solomon also touched on why people found the story captivating. She said that people relate it to like watching a movie. They wanted to see what was going to happen and a resolution that there would be a happy ending. Unfortunately, it didn't end well.

She continued by saying that certain people's fight-or-flight mechanisms were triggered, particularly those who regularly worry and experience anxiety.

People have various capacities for danger, according to Solomon, and conducting a safety check is essential for both personal growth and safety.

The Dangers of a Lack of Empathy in Society Today

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It is a fundamental human emotion that allows us to connect with others and build relationships. A society that lacks empathy is a society that is divided, angry, and, ultimately, less healthy.

People who lack empathy are more likely to act aggressively towards others. This can lead to an increase in violence, both in the home and in the community.

It is also essential for building strong social bonds. When people lack empathy, they are less likely to trust or cooperate with each other. This can lead to decreased social cohesion, making it difficult to solve problems and address challenges.

Empathy allows us to see the world from different perspectives. This can lead to new ideas and solutions to problems. When people lack empathy, they are more likely to be stuck in their own way of thinking, which can stifle creativity and innovation.

Empathy is a powerful emotion that can make the world a better place. Increasing empathy in our society can create a more just, peaceful, and healthy world for everyone.
