Los Angeles (18-36) appears destined for a lottery pick in the 2014 NBA draft.
If Lakers star Kobe Bryant does return this season, he'll be coming back to a different-looking backcourt. The Lakers traded guard Steve Blake on Wednesday to the Golden State Warriors, a deal which Bryant expressed his displeasure with on Twitter.
Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni also wasn't thrilled with trading Blake, who excelled this season in D'Antoni's system.
"He was the backbone we had this year, and you hate to lose that," D'Antoni said, via ESPN. "We've got 28 games. We're going to see if we can turn a negative thing into as much as a positive as we can. Develop the guys as much as we can and go into the summer with a little positive bounce."
Los Angeles received guards Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks from Golden State. The trade wasn't motivated by saving money, according to Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak, but rather to have the chance to evaluate some of the other players on the roster.
"It really got to the point where we needed to free up some time in the backcourt to look at Jordan [Farmar] and give Kendall [Marshall] the time that he's earned and let's review and evaluate where we are with those two players," Kupchak said, via ESPN. "And the other part of it is, we got back two young players that are developing."
The Lakers hope to snap a two-game losing streak on Friday when they host the Celtics, another team likely headed for the NBA lottery. Boston (19-36) has also lost two straight games and, like Los Angeles, is in the beginning stage of rebuilding.
