Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warns on Tuesday, July 4, that Russia plans to attack the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
Zelensky claims Russian troops have already planted suspected explosives in the nuclear facility.
Ukraine's Zelensky Warns Russia Plans to Attack Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
In a stunning revelation, the Ukrainian President has dropped a bombshell, warning the world about Russia's alleged diabolical scheme.
According to The Hill, Zelensky warned, citing Ukrainian intelligence in his nightly address to the nation. He says that Russian forces have placed "objects resembling explosives" on the roof of some buildings at the plant, which Russia currently holds.
The Ukraine President stresses that the explosive objects could be used to trigger a catastrophic explosion. He pointed out that the radiation from the nuclear station's possible explosion "affects everyone."
Zelensky further claimed that Russia could likely plan to "simulate an attack" on Europe's largest nuclear power plant. He further notes that Russia is "the only source of danger to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
The Ukrainian leader urges other countries to help stop the potential attack. He says, "It is the responsibility of everyone in the world to stop it; no one can stand aside, as radiation affects everyone."
The Russian forces successfully held the Zaporizhzhia power plant last year, or in March 2022, to be precise. Since then, it sent shockwaves across the globe as some fear that Russia might attack it to counter any advances from Ukraine.
Newsweek notes that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant is the crucial center point of Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, which Russian President Vladimir Putin kicked off in February 2022.
Zelensky's warning comes after a series of Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, including a hydroelectric dam in southern Ukraine that was destroyed last month. Ukraine has blamed Russia for the dam failure, which caused widespread flooding.
Russia's Possible Attack Against Europe's Largest Nuclear Power Plant
As per a report by The Guardian, Zelensky's latest warning is on top of his remarks last week in his press conference with Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez.
The Ukrainian leader disclosed last week that "there is a serious threat because Russia is technically ready to provoke a local explosion at the station."
On Tuesday, Zelensky told French President Emmanuel Macron about Russia's potential "dangerous provocations" in Europe's largest nuclear plant. The Ukraine President says that he and Marcon are working with United Nations' nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to keep the situation under control.
