Music or songs with AI-generated elements are eligible for prestigious Grammys nominations.
The Recording Academy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Harvey Mason Jr. confirmed it after the new guidelines on AI triggered some confusion.
Music with AI Elements Are Eligible for Nomination, Says Grammy CEO
The music industry is no stranger to technological advancements, but the latest breakthrough, specifically AI, is causing a stir in the world of melodies.
As per the Associated Press, the CEO of the Recording Academy, the organization that hosts the Grammy Awards, confirmed that music with AI elements is eligible for nomination. In other words, songs that use artificial intelligence to create or enhance their sound could be up for awards in any of the 86 categories.
Mason told Associated Press that "AI, or music that contains AI-created elements is eligible for entry and for consideration for Grammy nomination. Period."
However, the Recording Academy CEO says that in the new guidelines, they "are not going to give a Grammy or Grammy nomination to the AI portion." He also clarified that "as long as the human contributes in a more than de minimis amount, which to us means a meaningful way, they are and will always be considered for a nomination or win."
Mason further notes that they want technology to remain the same as human creativity. Instead, the prestigious Grammys wants to see technology as a means for musicians to "enhance" or "embellish" their creativity.
The Emergence of AI Music
AI offers artists access to a vast array of tools and techniques in the context of music. It enables them to experiment with unconventional melodies and harmonies. Some even go as far as writing their lyrics using groundbreaking technology. With AI's ability to analyze vast amounts of data and recognize patterns, musicians can dive into unexplored realms, which brings a fresh perspective to their work.
Sky News reports that the new Grammys guidelines on AI come after the high-profile artists David Guetta and Grimes started diving into the groundbreaking technology.
Chart-topping DJ Guetta recently shared a song replicating the voice of renowned rapper Eminem, which he dubs Emin-AI-em. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's ex-girlfriend Grimes permitted people to clone her voice using AI.
On top of that, Paul McCartney announced that the upcoming song of The Beatles uses AI to exact the voice of the late John Lennon. With AI-generated music sprouting like mushrooms, Interesting Engineering reports that streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify are now taking down tunes that violate their policies.
