Elton John, also known as the Rocket Man, bid his goodbyes to his fans on the final night of his farewell tour after five decades of bringing legendary music performances.
On Saturday night, the five-time Grammy award winner told millions of his fans that they would remain in his "head, heart, and soul." His remarks came as he concluded his marathon farewell tour in Stockholm with one of his biggest hits, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."
Elton John Bids Fans Farewell
The 76-year-old musician had nearly 4,600 performances worldwide throughout his music career. During his performance at Sweden's Tele2 Arena, he said it has been his "lifeblood" to play for his fans, calling them "absolutely magnificent."
John also paid an emotional tribute to his current bacn and crew, some of whom he had been touring with for several years. He began his last show with Bennie and the Jets and later performed many of his other hits, including "Candle in the Wind," "Philadelphia Freedom," "Rocket Man," and "Tiny Dancer," as per BBC.
The musician began his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in North America in 2018 and played for more than six million fans worldwide. One of the highlights of his final tour was his headline slot at the Glastonbury Festival, held last month.
That particular concert drew in one of the biggest crowds in the festival's history and a British TV audience of millions. Furthermore, his Stockholm performance included a video message sent by Coldplay, a band that was performing in the Swedish city of Gothenburg at the same time.
Chris Martin, the vocalist of Coldplay, told John he had helped bands artists around the world and expressed his love and admiration to the 76-year-old musician. Martin also thanked John for all of his contributions to the Aids Foundation.
A Music Career Spanning 50 Years
John's official Instagram account posted a video with the caption, "What a journey this tour has been, and now we find ourselves at the end. Tonight is the final night." The post also showed a clip from an interview in 2018 when the musician announced his retirement from touring, where he said that it would be the last time he traveled the world, according to CNN.
While the musician's farewell tour was supposed to end in 2021, it was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. John attributed his retirement from touring the world to his decision to focus more on his family, as he has two sons with his husband, David Furnish.
In the 2018 interview, John said that they had children who changed their lives, adding that in 2015, they sat down with their school schedule and realized that they would miss too much of it if he continued his career.
However, despite saying goodbye to global performances, John said he would still make music for his beloved fans. In 2020, he also said that he was open to the possibility of a residency devoted to his lesser-known songs, said the Rolling Stone.
