Mexican authorities are finalizing the permits for Tesla to begin the construction of its Gigafactory in the Mexican state of Nuevo León after announcing the company's intention to create one in the Latin American country during its Investor Day in March.
The company has talked about building the factory in record time with hopes of beating the Shanghai Gigafactory's timeline of nine months between breaking ground and production.
Tesla to Design New Vehicle in MX Gigafactory, Governor Says
State governor Samuel Alejandro García Sepúlveda said he is expecting the firm to be given the green light at "any moment" to start building. "We do not yet have a date for when, but the good news is that all the permits, for the environment, energy, water, everything is already checked, it is advancing," he added.
García added that Elon Musk's electric vehicle firm is currently in the "final stage of the design" of their new vehicle, which would mean "the production lines, the software, and everything that must be ready to start the plant" are also being finished.
Tesla said it was planning to build its next-generation vehicles at the Mexican Gigafactory, which was described as a cheaper electric hatchback and its robotaxi vehicle. If the company would be able to maintain an affordable entry price of between $25,000 and $30,000, the vehicle would achieve sales success, Inside EVs reported.
