A "headless" child's corpse was found on a beach in Spain, and the police have launched an investigation into the matter.
The gruesome discovery was made by a municipal cleaner who reported it to his superiors, who then contacted the authorities.
According to Daily Mail, a statement from the town hall said, "We inform you that this morning the body of a two to [3-year-old] child was found on the shoreline on the Costa Dorada beach. The area is cordoned off and officials are waiting for the judge to authorize the removal of the body. We ask the public to avoid the area."
Gruesome Discovery
The remains of a child, estimated to be between the ages of 2 and 3, were found on Tuesday morning, July 11, at a beach in the Costa Dorada resort of Roda de Berà, Tarragona Province, on the country's eastern coast.
It is believed that the child's decomposing corpse was washed up on the shore without its head and other limbs.
Officers from the Civil Guard have set up a barrier and are directing residents and tourists to other areas of the beach until a court can give permission to remove the corpse.
Roda de Berà Mayor Pere Virgili has been mentioned in local news as suggesting the boy might have been aboard a migrant boat that sank in the Mediterranean.
Mayor Virgili told El Pais that a municipal worker observed the kid lying on his back and initially thought he was a doll. Other individuals who first saw the human remains also mistook the decaying corpse for an object and did not immediately call the authorities.
As soon as Civil Guard officers got there, it was clear that it was a child's body.
A Civil Guard spokesperson made a statement: "All we can confirm at the moment is that the body of a baby has been found at Roda de Berà beach in the province of Tarragona. The alarm was raised at [8:50 AM] this morning. The matter is still under investigation."
Mayor Virgili noted that the corpse was clothed in "a bodysuit, a kind of tracksuit, and a jacket," stating that the kid was not wearing the proper clothing for the beach.
After receiving legal clearance, the body was transported at around 11:30 AM local time. The cause of death will likely be determined via an autopsy that will take place over the next several hours.
