No. 7 Cincinnati had their 15-game winning streak ended on Feb. 8 by SMU. Since that loss, the Bearcats (24-3) have won two consecutive games, including a 77-49 rout of UCF on Wednesday.
Cincinnati's defense improved over the past two games, something coach Mick Cronin believes is essential to making a deep run in March.
"To do what we want to do, we have to be great defensively," Cronin said, via the Associated Press. "The guys committed to that tonight (against UCF)."
The Bearcats won their first meeting this season against Louisville, 69-66. It was a close game, and Cronin expects Saturday's contest to be even more difficult.
"We've got to have great humility and understand how great we're going to have to play to win," said Cronin. "If we don't, we're in trouble. We failed that test against SMU the second game. Now is another chance to understand that beating a team twice of that caliber is tough."
No. 11 Louisville, meanwhile, is looking to make amends for their loss to Cincinnati on Jan. 30 and push their five-game winning streak to six. Although the Cardinals (22-4) are coming off an 80-54 blowout of South Florida on Tuesday, the team knows defeating Cincinnati will be a bigger challenger.
"We just have to rebound, because they outrebounded us as a team," redshirt freshman forward Mangok Mathiang said. "Every time we outrebound a team we end up with the victory, and that's the way we're going to win this game."
