American Flags Used in Military Must be 100% Made in USA Under New Rules

New regulations state that any American flags the Department of Defense purchases must be sourced and manufactured entirely in the United States.

The new rules, which took place on Friday, declare any United States flags used in the Army must have been crafted in America from start to finish, according to a report by TIME.

Pentagon officials made the announcement this week, USA Today reported.

Up until this point, American flags bought and used in the military often contained materials sourced from other countries, including certain kinds of ink and textiles.

Some flags purchased by the Department of Defense weren't 100 percent American-made, despite the fact that most of the companies selling the stars and stripes were based in the United States.

California democratic Rep. Mike Thompson wrote on social media last week that these kinds of materials used by servicemen and women should be produced in America.

"Our men [and] women in uniform should serve under American-made flags," Thompson posted on his Facebook page.

According to TIME, the Defense Department buys between 1,000 and 2,000 flags each year.

These flags are flown over Army bases and ships, burial sites for soldiers killed in the line of duty, and the Pentagon.
