According to CNN Edition's latest report, the curriculum "California's Cultural Contributions" was adopted after it was adjusted

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that this is good news since students in Southern California will be able to have the needed basic materials.

However, he still criticized the recent disapproval of the Temecula Valley Unified School District school board.

"But this vote lays bare the true motives of those who opposed this curriculum. This has never been about parents' rights," explained Newsom via CA.Gov.

"It's not even about Harvey Milk - who appears nowhere in the textbook students receive," he added.

The California leader explained that it is about the desire of extremists to control and censor the materials used to teach children.

Why TVUSD Rejected It at First

On May 16, the TVUSD school board rejected the curriculum; with board members voting 3-2.

They explained that parental involvement in the creation of the curriculum wasn't enough.
TVUSD school board members also criticized the curriculum since it allows materials mentioning Harvey Milk; an American politician and gay rights activist.

But, since the controversial curriculum was updated and received the approval of parents and teachers, the TVUSD school board no longer has a reason to reject it.

Newsom said that hate doesn't belong in the classrooms of California. But, since the previous rejection of the school board was a big deal for the Californian governor, he said that the California Department of Education is investigating the board's previous vote.

Aside from California, other states across the U.S. are also trying to censor topics about LGBTQ rights.

As of writing, there are almost 500 anti-LGBTQ bills that have been introduced in state legislatures. If you want to learn more about them, you can click this link.
