Arizona Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington was arrested on Friday and charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
Washington, 26, was taken into custody following an incident with his ex-girlfriend, FOX News reports. He allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of his newborn daughter, inside her Arizona apartment on Wednesday.
His ex-girlfriend alleges that he choked her; police arrived on the scene and observed marks on her throat.
He was booked at the Maricopa County Jail. Bond has been set at $4,200.
Washington and his ex-girlfriend are engaged in a legal battle for custody of their five-month-old daughter. Court records indicate that she has not allowed Washington to see his child. In a motion filed by Washington, he said, "[she is] making demands for money in return for parenting time."
The arrest comes one day after Phoenix police said that they are investigating allegations of domestic violence involving Washington.
Arizona selected Washington in the second-round of the 2010 NFL draft. He was invited to his first Pro Bowl in 2012. In his career, he has 319 tackles, 15 sacks and 4 interceptions. Washington signed a four-year, $32 million contract extension with Arizona in 2012.
The NFL suspended Washington in April for the first four games of the 2013 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Mia Garcia, a FOX 10 reporter in Phoenix, first tweeted confirmation of Washington's arrest on Friday.
