Kerry Kennedy is scheduled to appear in court on Monday to begin trial for a car accident she was involved in while being under the influence of a sleeping aid, CNN reported.
Kennedy, 54, daughter of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, was allegedly driving her SUV under the influence of zolpiedem when she crashed into a tractor-trailer in July 2012, according a police report.
She is charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. Trial will begin at Westchester County Court in White Plains, N.Y. at 9:30 a.m.
"Moments after the accident occurred, I told police that it was possible that I may have inadvertently taken a sleep aid instead of my daily thyroid medication," Kennedy said in a statement in 2012 after the accident.
Police said no other traces of drugs or alcohol were found in the toxicology report.
The maximum penalty Kennedy, who is president of the RFK Center for Justice & Human Rights, faces is one year in county jail. Last week, she missed jury selection due to a human rights trip to West Sahara.
According to the Star Tribune, there are only six jurors in the trial, which is expected to last about one week.
Her attorney has not commented on the issue.
Lucian Chafen, director of communications for the Westchester district attorney, only said the office "will be presenting our case on Monday" when asked to comment.
