The Grammy-nominated rapper faces the possibility of a 10-year prison sentence for his alleged involvement in the shooting incident that rocked the hip-hop world.

According to The New York Times, the chart-topping hip-hop superstar Megan Thee Stallion skipped the sentencing of Lanez. The artist, born Megan Pete, says that she did not want to be in the same room with the real rapper, Daystar Peterson. She further argued he was "clearly incapable of accepting any responsibility for his actions."

As per NBC News, the hearing for the high-profile case involving the Canadian rapper and the hip-hop star ended on Tuesday.

The case stemmed from an incident after the couple left Kylie Jenner's home in Hollywood Hills last July 12, 2020. Lanez reportedly shot the hip-hop superstar in the foot following an argument between the two.

The 31-year-old Canadian rapper pleaded not guilty to Stallion's accusations. But despite that, the jury still found him guilty of three felony charges in December 2022. It includes carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, discharging a firearm with gross negligence, and assault with a semi-automatic firearm.

The rapper appeared to the court donning his orange jumpsuit as the Los Angeles judge handed down his sentence. Lanez then expressed his regrets for his actions. He says that he is taking complete responsibility for the shooting incident.

The Canadian artist declares, "Everything I did that night, I take full responsibility," adding he is "just trying to be a better person."

Lanez's attorney, Jose Baez, denounced the 10-year sentence, calling it "incredibly harsh." The rapper's lawyers asserted a lower sentence of mere probation. They raised the mental condition of the rapper, noting that he is grappling with "alcohol-use disorder."

Yet, a Deputy District Attorney, Alexander Bott, says the shooting incident occurred "over a bruised ego."

Judge David Herriford of the Los Angeles County Superior Court read a total of 76 supportive letters backing Lanez, which includes rapper Iggy Azalea.

In the wake of the sentence, the Australian-born artist, Azalea, came forward to defend herself amid the backlash she received over her supportive letter in the case.

As Rolling Stone reports, Azalea addressed the issue in her recent post on X, formerly Twitter. She says, "I am not in support of throwing away [anyone's] life if we can give reasonable punishments that are rehabilitative instead." She continued to stress that she is for "prison reform."
