Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says he would be open to drone strikes against Mexican drug cartels if elected president of the United States (US).
The Republican presidential aspirant vows to do whatever it takes to take down the Mexico-based drug cartels.
Ron DeSantis Open to Use Drone Strikes Against Mexican Cartels
As per The Hill, DeSantis declares his bold openness to using drone strikes to dismantle Mexican drug cartels. The Republican leader divulged that if he were to win the US presidency, he would consider this aggressive tactic part of a comprehensive strategy to curb the influence and power of these criminal organizations.
The presidential candidate made such remarks during his Iowa campaign on Thursday, August 10. He admitted his openness to using drone strikes against Mexican cartels as a response to a question.
The Florida Gov. says, "We will lean in against the drug cartels. We will absolutely reserve the right if [they are] invading our country and killing our people." The Republican politician further emphasized that "we have the right to defend this country."
In his recent remarks, he declared, "If Mexico is not going to help us with that, well then [we are] going to have to do what we have to do." And as such, DeSantis boldly expressed his willingness to use aggressive tactics to curb the drug cartel issue. The Daily Beast says he vows to "use whatever force we need to defend the country."
Ron DeSantis' Presidential Campaign and Immigration
According to NBC News, DeSantis' presidential campaign has been shedding light on his strong stance on immigration matters. Last June, the Republican politician also suggested employing "deadly force" against migrants suspected of drug trafficking.
On top of these aggressive tactics, the Florida Gov. also vows to the birthright citizenship policy in the US. The measure automatically turns a child born in the US into a citizen. It does not matter if their parents are non-American citizens.
The Hill notes that former US President Trump reportedly turned to a similarly aggressive stance against Mexico's drug cartels. The ex-POTUS reportedly discussed missile strikes use in Mexico with his defense secretary.
DeSantis's plan to use drone strikes against the Mexican cartels is controversial. Some people believe that it is a necessary step to take to stop the cartels from trafficking drugs into the US. Others believe it is a reckless and dangerous plan that could lead to unintended consequences.
