La Roja Beats Blågults 2-1
Spain made the most highlighted upset so far as they defeated fan favorite Sweden 2-1 Tuesday (August 15).
Sweden was the team that kicked out the defending champions, the US Women's Soccer Team, out of the competition in the knockout stages.
The game went on without any team scoring any goal until the last 10 minutes, which excited the crowd in Auckland. Salma Paralluelo (Spain) and Rebecka Blomqvist (Sweden) scored goals for their respective teams before the 90th minute.
Suddenly, Olga Carmona scored the tie-breaking goal with only seconds to go before the end of the game.
The win advanced the Spanish La Roja to its very first Women's World Cup final after only three attempts.
Lionesses Defeat Matildas 3-1
As for the English Lionesses, they literally did beat the Australian Matildas in their own backyard 3-1 Wednesday (August 16) in Sydney.
The Matildas' sole goal came from star player Sam Kerr in the second half, equalling Lioness Ella Toone's goal in the first half.
However, England scored two more goals, securing the second ticket to the finals.
While the Australians were heartbroken, their feat was the best they had so far. Their only hope to best their performance is to defeat Sweden in the battle for third place on August 19.
