Russia-Ukraine war YouTube videos led to a $32,000 fine against the video platform's owner, Google. This was confirmed by a Russian court on Thursday, Aug. 17.
Google Fined Due to Russia-Ukraine War YouTube Videos
According to ABC News' latest report, Google faces a $32,000 fine after failing to delete Russia-Ukraine war videos on YouTube.
Officials claim that many of these videos contain false information about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The latest fine is quite similar to the decision made by a magistrate's court in early August against Apple and the Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts the popular site Wikipedia.
The Russian court said that YouTube was found guilty of failing to delete videos with misinformation about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Russia claims that these YouTube videos are part of a special military operation.
As of writing, Google hasn't made any comment regarding the $32,000 fine imposed against it.
Issue With Russia-Ukraine War YouTube Videos
Aside from allegedly spreading false information, the Russian court also found Google guilty of giving away information on how to gain entry to facilities that are not open to minors.
Russian officials haven't confirmed what these facilities are. Google is not the only company facing fines in Russia.
Politico reported that ever since the full-scale invasion began in Ukraine, the Russian government has been making efforts to control online content in the country.
Recently, the social media platform Reddit also received a fine for not deleting false content.
In 2022, Google also faced a fine of over $391 million because of the same reason. Because of the restrictions imposed by Russia to control social media platforms and other websites, Google began scaling down its activities in Russia.
Google even filed bankruptcy for its local subsidiary in Russia in 2022 due to Moscow's measures, which made it impossible to do business in the country.
But, it looks like Google needs to lie low even more because its YouTube videos showing the Russia-Ukraine war led to another fine.
