One student died after a school bus overturned and crashed in Clark County, Ohio Tuesday morning (August 22).

Officials said 26 others were injured at the scene and taken to hospital for treatment.

Ohio State Highway Patrol's Tyler Ross told reporters the bus, which had 52 students on board at the time of the crash, had no seatbelts.

The school district, Northwestern Local Schools, said Tuesday was supposed to be the first day of school for the district, and that the accident involved an elementary school route, ABC News reported.

The driver and passenger of the car were identified as Hermanio Joseph, 35, and Roberto Mompremier, 37, respectively. The school bus driver was also identified as 68-year-old Alfred E. Collier.

Car Involved in School Bus Accident

Ross detailed a Honda Odyssey veered left of center and into the lane of the school bus, prompting the bus operator to drive onto the shoulder to avoid the car, but the vehicles still made contact.

The bus then went off the right side of the road and overturned, while the car went off to the other side of the road and came to a rest.

Of the 23 injured student passengers of the bus, one suffered serious injuries while the other 22 were only lightly injured.

Collier, Joseph, and Mompremier also suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Ross added.

Investigations regarding the crash are continuing.
