Sen. Tester Death Threat Update: Montana Man Faces Over 2 Years of Imprisonment
According to NBC News' latest report, Smith was sentenced to 2 and a half years in federal prison after making death threats against Tester.
In April, the Montana resident pleaded guilty to one count of threats to murder and injure the senator.
The second count was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen as part of a plea agreement, as reported by the Associated Press.
The case of the 46-year-old man started when he threatened Tester on Jan. 30. Authorities said that Smith did this by sending voicemails to Jon Tester's office.
In one of his voicemails, the Montana man said that he would "rip your head off" to Tester. His statements were laced with profanity based on the investigation. In another voicemail, Smith even challenged the senator to contact the FBI.
Court records confirmed that Smith admitted that he was threatening the American official on purpose.
On Feb. 1, the FBI told Smith to stop threatening the U.S. senator. Unfortunately, the man decided to resume his alarming act after 10 days.
Because of this, the FBI decided to arrest him on Feb. 22. The death threats made by Smith are very serious since Tester is currently seeking his fourth term in the U.S. Senate.
Other US Officials Receiving Death Threats
Sen. Jon Tester is not the only American official who receives death threats. Even U.S. President Joe Biden is not safe from these alarming remarks.
Recently, a Utah resident threatened the American leader, saying that he would shoot him dead. In his Facebook post, he said that he would use his ghillie suit and M24 sniper rifle once Biden visited Utah.
The man was shot by the FBI hours before Joe Biden landed in Utah. If you want to learn more about this incident, you can click here.
