Syracuse's second straight loss dropped them from No. 1 in the nation to No. 4. The Orange (25-2) were unable to bounce back from Wednesday's 62-59 loss to Boston College and fell on Saturday to Duke, 66-60.
With March around the corner, it's about getting back on track.
"This end of the year is important for us," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said, via ESPN. "We flew through obviously and escaped a few times. We knew the end of the year would be hard and that's fine.
"These games help you. This will help you. This was a tournament game. This will help you. We played slow and you see that in tournaments. We've learned a lot and we'll learn a lot more. We know how tough our next few games are."
Maryland, meanwhile, ended their two-game losing streak on Tuesday with a 71-60 win against Wake Forest.
"I'm proud of my group," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said. "We had some guys step up tonight. Nick Faust was terrific. I thought his passing was great and so was his defense. He scored, defended, made free throws, rebounded and did a lot of good things to help us win tonight."
The unranked Terrapins (15-12), who haven't played since Tuesday, have had almost a week to prepare for the Orange. While Syracuse is no longer undefeated, Maryland can strike a major blow to Syracuse by handing them their third straight loss.
"...There's still a lot of hype around the game," Maryland sophomore swingman Jake Layman said. "It's still huge for us."
