A bodybuilder from Essex, England, almost died after his shoulder clicked.
51-year-old Mark Oakes, a former karate black belter and professional bodybuilder, shares his experience in 2022 that completely changed his life.
Bodybuilder Almost Died After His Shoulder Clicked
According to The Daily Mail UK, the life-threatening experience of Mark began in 2022 when he was cleaning windows at home.
During his house chores, the former bodybuilder said that his shoulder made a clicking sound. At first, he disregarded what happened as he believed it was normal for his age.
However, he can no longer move his arm after a few hours. He decided to sleep earlier even though he was feeling shivery and feverish.
Since his condition wasn't getting any better, Mark visited A&E (accident and emergency). LADBible reported that doctors thought the patient only needed orthopedic surgery.
Health specialists gave him painkillers and sent him home while waiting for the needed surgery. When his condition worsened, Mark used the Apple Watch of her wife, Heather.
They discovered his blood oxygen levels were 68% lower than the healthy average of 95-100pc.
Mark went back to the hospital to inform doctors about his very low oxygen levels. They placed him under anesthetic in order to drain his shoulder.
Unfortunately, his kidneys and liver also started failing. Around 15 hours later, doctors decided to put him in intensive care.
Sepsis Almost Took Mark's Life
Doctors confirmed that Mark was suffering from sepsis, the body's extreme response to an infection.
After three days of treatment, the hospital called Mark's wife and his son to say their goodbyes.
Thankfully, the ex-bodybuilder was able to survive his medical condition.
"Heather was confident I would be alright in the end though - she views me as strong and a fighter," said Mark.
He added that his wife had the toughest journey while he was at the hospital.
After recovering, Mark wanted to help raise awareness about this health condition.
Currently, he is working with the Sepsis Research FEAT, a charity organization in the United Kingdom.
Mark Oakes is just among the hundreds of thousands of U.K. residents affected by sepsis. If you want to learn more about this deadly medical condition, you can click this link.
