A new Google layoff is now targeting the company's recruitment department.
The search engine giant's latest cost-cutting effort is expected to terminate hundreds of its employees who helped hire new workers.
Google To Terminate Recruitment Division Employees
This September, Google is the latest tech giant to announce a mass layoff affecting hundreds of its employees. According to CNN Business, the termination in its recruitment division is its newest after its parent company, Alphabet, laid off around 6% (12,000 staff) of its workforce in January.
Recently, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that they are continuously slowing their recruitment and expense growth pace.
"To ensure we operate efficiently, we've made the hard decision to reduce the size of our recruiting team," said the tech executive on Wednesday, September 13.
However, most of the employees in the hiring department will be retained so that Google can continue recruiting top engineering talents and other critical roles.
"We continue to invest in top engineering and technical talent while also meaningfully slowing the pace of our overall hiring," said Pichai.
The search engine giant didn't disclose the exact number of affected employees. It only clarified that the latest termination plan is not a part of any wider-scope layoffs.
Google promised that they will support those who will lose their jobs with severance pay and other benefits. On LinkedIn, numerous Google recruiters in the user experience, software engineering, cloud, and other teams already confirmed that they are affected by the latest layoff.
"We continue to invest in top engineering and technical talent while also meaningfully slowing the pace of our overall hiring," said one of the affected Google staff.

Employees in Tech Industry Still Experience Terminations
This 2023, Tech Crunch reported that tens of thousands of employees in the technology industry are still experiencing terminations.
In January, over 89,000 workers lost their jobs. Meanwhile, more than 40,000 employees were laid off in February. These are just some of the unlucky staff terminated by tech companies. You can check the list below to see how many more were laid off in the past few months:
- March: 37,823
- April: 20,014
- May: 14,928
- June 10,958
- July: 10,589
- August: 9,545
Overall, over 224,000 workers in the tech sector lost their jobs due to the cost-cutting efforts of Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and other tech giants. But, based on the above numbers, there's a downward trend. This means the layoffs could further decrease as the year nears.
