Acer Says Microsoft Could Become As Big As Apple and Google In The Mobile Industry

According to Acer officials, Microsoft could soon become as big as Apple and Google in the mobile industry.

Acer President Jim Wong was all praises for Microsoft, saying the company has the potential to be as big and pose tough competition to the likes of Apple and Google in the mobile industry. Wong reveals that the only thing holding Microsoft back is the lack of applications available on its tablets and mobiles, something that the company is working on currently. Acer is known to sell a wide range of laptops and tablets with Windows, but currently does not offer phones running on Microsoft software.

"Windows for now is still a leader in the productivity field," he said, referring to Microsoft's dominance in PCs and office software. Within the next year, the mobile version of the software is poised to mount a real challenge, he said. "We have high hopes."

Since people are moving away from PCs and toward tablets and smartphones, Acer is eager to see its partner Microsoft make the transition from PCs to mobile phones.

Until now, Microsoft hasn't been able to make much of an impression in either smartphones or tablets. Research firm IDC pointed out that PC shipments last year fell by over 14 percent. According to IDC, "Windows accounted for less than 4 percent of tablet shipments in the first quarter, compared with 40 percent for Apple's iOS and almost 57 percent for Google's Android. In smartphones, Microsoft had 2.7 percent of the market at the end of last year. Android and Apple combined controlled more than 90 percent of shipments."
